[Global Warming]

"Past the Point of No Return."

Good Lord, I hope this is an advocacy view:
The world has already passed the point of no return for climate change, and civilisation as we know it is now unlikely to survive, according to James Lovelock... In a profoundly pessimistic new assessment, published in today's Independent, Professor Lovelock suggests that efforts to counter global warming cannot succeed, and that, in effect, it is already too late.

The world and human society face disaster to a worse extent, and on a faster timescale, than almost anybody realises, he believes. He writes: " Before this century is over, billions of us will die, and the few breeding pairs of people that survive will be in the Arctic where the climate remains tolerable."

Professor Lovelock, who conceived the idea of Gaia in the 1970s while examining the possibility of life on Mars for Nasa in the US, has been warning of the dangers of climate change since major concerns about it first began nearly 20 years ago.
Hat tip to Iggi.

You know Malthus has been proven wrong many times before.

The world is about to turn a corner and the future is bright. Watch, the future of energy will be found in CO2 gobbling agriculture. As incomes continue to rise around the world food types and qualities will diversify and this diversification will work its way through all things agriculture. We will also see for the first time real expansion in industrial ag-prodcuts such as bidoeisel, bio-based industrial lubes, and bio-plastics. Much of our current waste will become biodegradable and sustainable at a fraction of the price of petroleum.

Global warming alarmist usually obstruct progress and solution in the name of their secular-religion of simplicity and niche lifestyle above all others. They polarize simple issues of science/technology by framing them as complex issues of up-or-down lifestyle change.

Its tragically-funny but the largest obstacle to actually addressing global warming and sustainability as a middle of the road issue are the hippies and hipsters who define the issues.

Yes, it is always the people who care about issues who stand in the way of good policy. Those who, coincidentally, stand to lose from policy changes in global warming are actually the ones who ultimately save the day.
