Drowned

Grover Norquist's famously-stated goal was to drown government in a bathtub. Since the 1980s, the GOP has been explicit in its desire to dismantle government--and particularly that demonic federal government, from which the New Deal sprang. The government isn't the solution to its citizens' problems, but the source of them. Bush has used the past five years to further weaken that government, shifting federal funds from infrastructure-support agencies like FEMA to the pockets of big business and the wealthy. What we're witnessing in the wake of Katrina is the direct, obvious, and sadly predictable result of turning the federal government over to a bunch of ideologues who despise it.
