I think, in a very real way, the Supreme Court ended functional American democracy in the past three days. In overturning the unanimous Chevron decision from the 80s, they seized control for the judiciary over who decides how government agencies function. They used their naked political power to shield J6 insurrectionists, and today they decided that no official action taken by a President is subject to legal review.
That does not describe a democracy.
I know everyone is very worried about Joe Biden’s chances in Nov, but let’s be honest, it doesn’t really matter if he’s elected. The Supreme Court and Senate won’t let him govern. It will gum up the works in the transition to a Putin-style managed democracy, but these rulings, along with all the other efforts to strengthen minority rule by Republicans, makes the endgame inevitable.
Our lives won’t end and people living in blue states will have better, or at least less brutal lives, but our democracy has ended. I sound deranged and apocalyptic, but it is a fairly objective statement of the facts.
